Community Education Program

The Community Education Program is part of East Bay Herbals' mission to provide accessible and relatable information about herbal medicine and holistic nutrition to the community.  All classes are free or low-cost and are open to the public. We aim to offer at least one free class a season, but feel free to check back on the site for recent additions as they come.

Join East Bay Herbals for a free community class on the beloved classic, elderberry syrup! This traditional herbal remedy has been a staple in the herbal world for years and is a go-to elixir for supporting the immune system throughout the winter as well as the transitional months. This easy-to-make recipe can be easily crafted at home, using just a few ingredients . In this half-hour workshop, we'll talk about the medicinal value of elderberries as well as my other favorite ingredients to add to this tasty elixir.

This hour-long workshop will focus on bringing the magic of medicinal herbs into the kitchen as we transition from winter into spring. As a staple food in both seasons, broths are a perfect way to help support aid the body in this transition. As a  medicinal food, broths also help to support digestion, which is an area of focus for the body during spring. In this course we'll you'll also learn how to utilize seasonal ingredients such as mushrooms and nettle, to help further fortify your broths and soups. You'll lean how to make broths from scratch, and how to infuse them botanicals, turning your food into medicine. Each participant will also get a free copy of my Medicinal Broths and Soups recipe book.

In honor of the season of spring, let us explore the world of medicinal plants through the lens of flowers. We'll explore local wildflowers and their medicinal properties as well as other edible flowers and their health benefits. This class will include a quick intro into what herbalism is and how we can use one of nature's most beautiful masterpieces (flowers) to help support us in our health and well-being. Students will walk away knowing the medicinal benefits of a handful of flowers and how they can be used in both teas and cooking.

Join us for a meander around the base of Mount Diablo to explore the medicinal plants growing along the trails at Mitchell Canyon. We will talk about the modern-day uses of the plants we see and discover some of the diversity that this abundant ecosystem holds. The walk will begin in the native plant garden at the Mitchell Canyon Visitor Center, where we will start our journey into the world of local medicinal herbs and their wonder/magic
